This week I am attending the fourth and last week of the Cimatics Masterclass Live A/V 2007/2008 in Brussels. Cimatics is a Brussels based international platform for Live A/V. This Masterclass consists of a series of 4 workshops with lectures from different internationally renowned media artists / theorists (amongst others Marc Amerika, Lab[au], Yves de Mey, Jerry Galle, Brendan Byrne & Ana Carvalho, Boris Debackere). The practical part is all about collaboration: 10 selected artists, working in different fields of media-art (and with backgrounds ranging from choreography to architecture) form groups and collaborate with each other, with the aim of creating an audiovisual performance project.
Muisman Opnemen is the newest performance of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which I again composed the soundtrack. Muisman Opnemen is based on the novel ‘The Overcoat’ by Nikolaj Gogol (1809 – 1852) and is about Muisman, a civil servant with a futile function. He nevertheless loves his job and everyday, he arrives happy at the office. One day, he meets the impulsive ‘girl upstairs’. She pursues him to buy a new overcoat. This overcoat will forever change his life.
From february 15th – february 19th 2008, i will present a new video from my ‘Time Sketch’ series at exhibition Narratives in Space // Spatial Narrations in Ghent (BE). This installation exhibition is organised by Ghent based foundation Existentie, a platform that brings together artists, arts critics and curators.
Time Sketch #2 (1.20 min. loop / SD Video / No Sound) is a short experimental video work, based on the same ideas and techniques i used in 24H Panorama and Scenes From My Backyard. Here, i experimented with the idea of showing simultaneously four different ‘tempi’ of one take of footage. Time appears in a stretched or compressed manner, creating a sort of ‘temporal disorientation’.
24H Panorama will be screened at the ‘Festival International Séquence Court Métrage’ in Toulouse (France). It will be part of the compilation programme “The World Under Construction”, scheduled on saturday december 1st, at 19h00 in Cinémathéque de Toulouse.
Maandag of Dinsdag is a new play of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which i composed music and (partly) did light- and stagedesign. It is inspired by ‘The Hours’ (2002), the oscar-winning movie directed by Stephen Daldry. Maandag of Dinsdag is a portrait of Gina, Laura and Clarissa, who all ended up in an emotional vacuum. As a result, their luck becomes nothing more than a façade. Maandag of Dinsdag shows the day on which this façade will be demolished.
“Gina wants to be independent, but asks her husband for permission if she wants to take a walk. Laura tries to hide that she’s too depressive to even bake a cake and has to ask her three year old son where to start. Clarissa makes sure she’s always too busy to think”
On october 2nd 2007, a modified version of the motion tracking system i originally developed for my Lightroom project, will be used in an interactive sound-installation of Werner Urban at the Kinderboekenbal 2007 at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam. For those interested i will share here a little bit of the technical backgrounds of this system.
Cowboy Bij Nacht will present short excerpts from two upcoming theatre shows at Uitfeest 2007, marking the beginning of the cultural season. At Huis a.d. Werf, ‘Maandag of Dinsdag’ will be playing at 13.30 and 14.30 (Premiere will be october 25 2007 at Huis aan de Werf). At the Ganzenmarkt (Stadhuisplein), on every whole hour, there will be a short excerpt titled ‘Ondergetekende’. The premiere of this new performance is scheduled somewhere in spring 2008. I will make music for both pieces.
I'm an interdisciplinary artist, working in the overlapping fields of theatre, music and media art. This site functions as my online portfolio of art projects.
